I thought answers appeared chronologically (using date and time they were answered) but I notice that they sometimes alter their position on the page. Why is this?

Answers are sorted by default according to the number of votes received. This ensures that the "best" answers, according to the community view, filter to the top of the page.

The vast majority of visitors to IQ never write questions or answers. They are visitors who find the site through the internet search engines and want an answer quickly to the question they have in mind. The voting sort order helps them quickly find the best answers, as judged by the community.

See the FAQ for more information on voting: http://www.inwardquest.com/faq/

Also you can sort the answers by clicking on "active", "oldest", "newest" or "most voted". The first two will give you chronological order.
